Icelandic Nursing Licence
Nurses that are citizens of a state that is a member of the EEA (European Economic Area)
To be able to practice nursing in Iceland you are required to have an Icelandic nursing license. The Directorate of Health needs to recognise your nursing license. Therefore you need to send the following papers to the Directorate of Health.
- Certified proof of your citizenship in an EEA country. A certified copy of your passport is sufficient.
- Certified copy of your diploma or nursing degree showing that you are registered as a nurse in your home country.
- Certified copy of your nursing license. This certificate must not be older than three months to ensure its up-to-date validity.
- Letter of good standing. This includes a statement that your training for basic qualifications comply with the training standards laid down by EEA and a verification that you have a valid nursing licence in your home country.
All these copies must be certified by the respective authorities – photocopies of documents are not accepted. These documents should be written in English and any translation should be certified by a governmental authority of an official translator.
The Icelandic Nursing Association is a member of the International Council of Nursing and we use the same criteria as the ICN regarding job applications from nurses not coming from an EEA country (European Economic Area)

- Certified copy of your diploma or nursing degree showing that you are registered as a nurse in your home country.
- Certified copy of your nursing license. This certificate must not be older than three months to ensure its up-to-date validity.
- Certified copy of full details of the programme of your nursing studies: an outline of the curriculum, the length of the program, a description of the courses with the number of lectures, discussion and clinical work.

Before granted an Icelandic nursing license from the Directorate of Health you have to be able to speak Icelandic.
Please note, that prior to your arrival in Iceland you have to contact an Icelandic employer and conclude a contract of engagement with him. Foreign nationals coming to Iceland for the purpose of being engaged in work without a work permit having been obtained in advance shall be ordered to leave according to the Ministry of Social Affairs.
